1ST NATIONAL SCIENCE CONGRESS ENDS |

| The Ministry of Environment Science and Technology organized the first National Science Congress from 2nd to 5th August 2011. It was under the theme “Water, Sanitation and Environment: Securing our Future through Science”. The congress aimed at promoting and advancing the course of science in Ghana and Africa, to create a platform for scientist to discuss national development as it relate to science and also to foster effective communication between scientist, policy makers and the public.
The President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills opened the congress by emphasizing the importance of science and technology in the development of nations. He promised that 1% of the national budget will be allocated to the promotion of Science and Technology in Ghana. There were presentations covering issues on water, sanitation and the environment. Topics include Waste Management in the Accra Metropolis, Addressing challenges in the provision of safe drinking water in the Cape Coast Metropolis, Waste to energy projects, Rural water access and quality, Waste management in the rural areas, Water Quality Standards, Innovations in Water and Waste management, Sanitation and health and many others.

| The EPA organized a workshop for Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) in Ghana to brief them on permitting requirements and what environmental officers look for during field monitoring. The Acting Executive Director of EPA, Mr. D. S. Amlalo complained that monitoring of these companies shows that some of them are operating without environmental permits and others did not renew their expired permits, leading to low levels of compliance to environmental regulations. The Companies are to update their Corporate Environmental Policy every three years and to obtain environmental certificates.

SECOND HAND FRIDGE DEALERS REGISTERED |

| The Environmental Protection Agency is registering dealers of used refrigerators and air condition towards enforcing the ban on importation and sale of such items in the country. The ban for the importation of used fridges came into effect in 2008 but was extended for three years to enable dealers get ample time to adjust to the ban. Mr. Daniel Amlalo the Acting Executive Director of the Agency told the dealers and other stakeholder at a meeting of in Amasaman. The ban will be enforced from 31st December 2012. The enforcement is critical because of the deteriorating environment caused by secondhand fridges that have lost their life span.

This year National Noise Awaresness Day Celebration was held on Friday, 15th April 2011, at the British Council Hall at 9.00am, with the theme "Noise is a Slow and Subtle Killer. Protect Your hearing, Protect Your health." The function was chaired by Mr. Emmanuel Siisi Wilson, Board Chairman-EPA.

AKOBEN program is an environmental performance rating and disclosure initiative of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Government of Ghana. Under the AKOBEN initiative, the environmental performance of mining and manufacturing operations is assessed using a five-color rating scheme.
The five colors are GOLD, GREEN, BLUE, ORANGE and RED, indicating environmental performance ranging from excellent to poor. These ratings are annually disclosed to the public and the general media, and it aims to strengthen public awareness and participation. AKOBEN ratings are evaluated by analyzing more than a hundred performance indicators that include quantitative data as well as qualitative and visual information.
