Welcome 

Welcome to the Chemicals Control and Management Centre (CCMC) of the EPA. The Centre provides you with all that you need to
know about the management and control of chemicals and other related activities in Ghana.

About the CCMC

The CCMC is a division of the EPA with three main departments namely;
1. Pesticides(PD)
2. Industrial/consumer chemicals(ICCD) and
3. National Ozone Unit(NOU)
 
The CCMC is headed by a Director, who is also the Pesticides Registrar. The office is located on the ground floor of the EPA headoffice building in Accra. The CCMC is responsible for implementing sections of Part I and all of Part II of the Environmental Protection Act 1994, (Act 490). more

Our mission

The mission of the CCMC is to ensure the proper labelling, distribution, storage, transportation, use, application,
and disposal of chemicals and associated hazardous waste within Ghana through fair and equitable implementation and
enforcement of the EPA Act 490.

Our   Objectives are:

• To protect human health and the environment from the indiscriminate, inappropriate use and improper management
  of chemicals.
• To ensure the co-existence of the general population with chemical substances through maximization of their benefits whilst minimizing adverse health and environmental impacts.
• To ensure safe use of chemicals for people and the environment.
• To promote health and safety in the manufacturing, storage, supply, transport and use of chemicals in  the work place.

 

We are responsible for:

• Regulating the use of pesticides for agriculture, horticulture, forestry, gardening and public health  and other pesticides related uses
• Monitoring the use of pesticides and take enforcement action against illegal use.
• Providing policy advice to government and take the lead on pesticide issues.
• Monitoring and providing controls on industrial/consumer chemicals and ozone depleting substances  in Ghana
• Providing information on chemicals to the entire populace of Ghana.
• Research and development in issues relating to pesticides and industrial/consumer chemicals.
• Meeting our international obligations for the control and management of chemicals.
• Management and disposal of hazardous chemicals and waste

Main activities

1. Permitting  of chemical imports and exports
2. Inspection & Monitoring of industrial/consumer chemicals and agrochemicals
3. Management of hazardous waste and obsolete chemicals including transport, storage and disposal of such
  hazardous chemicals and waste.
4. Pesticides Registration & Licensing
5. Projects/international relations/research.

International obligations

The CCMC provides the secretariat for the following multilateral Environmental Agreement:
• Stockholm convention on persistent organic pollutants
• Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal
• Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides  in International Trade
• Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management(SAICM)

Advisory bodies

The centre is the host of two main national committees

1. The Hazardous Chemicals Committee(HCC) established under Section 15 of the EPA Act, 1994(Act 490)
2. The Pesticides Technical Committee(PTC) established under Section 53 of the EPA Act, 1994, (Act 490)
